Dear Pepper,
I am a single woman, divorced after 23 years of marriage with my kids off to college. Ideally, I would like to have a serious relationship, but if that isn’t around the corner, I still want sex and companionship. I feel as sexually alive as I did when I was 25, but the number and availability of men for me has changed. How do I look for a life partner but enjoy sexual adventure along the way? Sincerely,
A Single Sexologist in Seattle

This is a letter I could have written to myself five years ago.   After three decades of answering people’s questions about their emotional, sexual and romantic lives, after writing numerous books on sex and relationships, after thirty-five years as a Sociology professor at the University of Washington, you would think I could come up with an easy answer to my own question.  The situation was at least humorous and in no small part ironic.” ~ from PRIME by Dr. Pepper Schwartz

With PRIME: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, renowned author of more than a dozen books on sexuality and relationships and tenured at the University of Washington, takes readers on an intimate journey to answer the ultimate questions about dating – and mating – after age fifty. Pepper’s own divorce led to a five-year odyssey of exotic travel, romance, mind-blowing sex, and true love. PRIME: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years offers a roadmap of her journey so that other fifty-plus women will be inspired to go on their own quest for emotional and sexual fulfillment.

How is sexual satisfaction – with or without emotional intimacy – achieved? What are the compromises, risks, and rewards a woman in her “sensual years” can expect to find in the dating world? And how does she even begin to start? Pepper’s first, and most fundamental piece of advice for her peers, is to embrace a spirit of adventure:

Following her own advice, Pepper clicks into the world of online dating. From the “man who made animal noises” (during conversation – not sex) to the otherwise charming Frenchman with full-body tattoos, Pepper finds her dating experiences to be anything but boring as each new man brings lessons about life, lust, and love. PRIME offers first-hand, practical tips for every step of the cyber-dating process to make sure your experiences are safe, sensual, and satisfying.

In the end, there is no easy answer to finding true love or great sex. And, as Pepper is the first to admit, there is no single way to begin looking. There is, however, one sure way not to find it: if you back away from the risk because you stop believing in the reward.  “[Women] cut short their emotional, romantic, and sexual life because there is no known path to sexual fulfillment or romantic adventure after 50.” But PRIME reminds us that this does not have to be true. “It is only true if our imagination, energy, and courage fail us.” Now, armed with the wit, wisdom, and bravery of Dr. Pepper Schwartz’s newest book, women have one less reason to allow that to happen.
